How to Create a Family Culture

What is a Family Culture?

  • Family culture is defined as the collective attitudes, values, goals, and practices that shape a family unit.

The Importance of Family Culture

    • A supportive family culture nurtures a sense of belonging and prevents children from seeking validation from external societal influences.
    • A family culture doesn’t take away the individuality of people within the family, it simply characterizes what we work to have in common.

Components of a Happy Family Culture

      • Values: Identifying what holds utmost importance for the family, with faith as a cornerstone.
        • Emphasis on Christian faith and human virtues like honesty, respect, charity, and strength.
      • Goals: Setting personal holiness and educational excellence as primary goals.
        • Encouragement of daily faith practices and academic challenges.
        • Importance of envisioning future selves and establishing long-term goals.
      • Expectations: Establishing clear behavioral expectations within the family.
        • Parents aim to be affectionate, encouraging, and consistent.
        • Emphasis on respect, obedience, honesty, kindness, simplicity, and patience.

Family Togetherness Contributes to an Excellent Family Culture

        • Advocacy for shared meals and celebrations to strengthen familial bonds.
        • Reflection on the family’s identity and its influence on children’s social experiences.

        Encouragement for Reflection and Action

        • Identify your goals and values for your family life.
        • Create opportunities for connection and communication.
        • There’s a basic human need of belonging that everyone possesses.
        • If WE don’t give our children a culture to belong to, society will, their peer group will – everyone has an innate need to belong to a “tribe”, a family, a group. Make YOUR family the place where everyone feels connected through mutual values and faith goals.
